Tips to Ensure Success on Your Antelope Hunt

Tips to Ensure Success on Your Antelope Hunt

Antelope season is right around the corner, and we couldn’t be more excited. As the fastest land animals in North America, Pronghorn Antelopes always present a unique challenge for hunters in Montana. For hunters who haven’t gone on an Antelope hunt before, there are some special considerations to keep in mind to maximize your chances of bagging your quarry.

Rely on Stealth

Pronghorns have an excellent sense of vision. You’ll be lucky to get closer than 100 yards to one without getting busted. Most of the shots we take are from around 200 yards. Their sense of smell and hearing leaves something to be desired, but if they spot you moving you’ll quickly lose your chance at a clean shot. Plan your approach carefully and keep out of their line of sight at all costs.

Practice Your Long Shots

Aside from staying stealthy, becoming adept at taking long shots will give you the best chance of success on an antelope hunt.  Keep your rangefinder close at hand, and spend some time honing your long shot technique (between 200 and 300 yards) in the months prior to your hunt. The last thing you want is to miss a shot after a long day of stalking.

Mind Your Gear

A good pair of binoculars and a rangefinder are must-have items on an antelope hunt. You’ll also want to invest in some powerful optics for your rifle if you don’t have them already. Lightweight, breathable gear is ideal as you can expect to be doing a lot of walking and stalking on the hunt.
